1900年的南京路
南京东路的前身叫派克弄、花园弄。1864年,管理英租界行政事务的工部局规范英租界的路名，将租界内东西向道路以中国城市命名，南北向道路以中国省份命名。由于《南京条约》给英国带来了巨大利益，于是这条路被命名为南京路。100多年前，第一批煤气路灯、第一家自来水用户、第一盏电灯、第一个道路排水系统、第一条有轨电车线路，就从南京路开始。1908年掌握南京路地产的洋人沙逊、哈同耗资60万两白银，从印度进口400万块铁藜木，涂上一层柏油铺设于南京路，就此该路成为远东最漂亮道路。从20世纪初到20世纪30年代中期，南京路已拥有绸缎、衣庄、银楼，茶食等30多个行业，商号增至277户。尤其是海外华侨到沪投资开设的先施、永安、新新、大新四大公司的出现，突破单一经营的传统商业模式，融吃、穿、用、娱乐为一体。
21世纪初的南京路步行街
1949年5月上海解放后，南京路延续着昔日繁华，又不断注入新时代的元素和精神，被誉为“中华商业第一街”。1995年，为提升这条世界名街的功能，构想开设上海第一条步行街。周末步行街试行时，日人流量170万，出现百万人逛大街的壮观。1998年，市政府决定建设全天候的南京路步行街，提出完善购物、旅游、文化、展示、商务五大功能。1999年9月20日，东起河南中路，西至西藏中路，全长1033米、街宽20～28米的南京路步行街竣工开街。
步行街两端竖立着由江泽民题写街名的石碑，背面刻有中、英文对照的建街说明。步行街中心线偏北是一条用深红色花岗石铺成42米宽的金带，金带上竖起了66盏德国路灯，设置了花坛、电话亭、服务亭、指示牌、雕塑等，营造海派韵味的街头风情，是供游人小憩的场所。金带南侧是7米宽的观光车道，玲珑精致的电动观光车在此来回行驶。无障碍盲道旁紧挨着一排圆形地灯。入夜，乳白色地灯射出柔和的光，与行人优雅的步伐、五彩缤纷的霓虹灯光交织而成一幅现代夜景图。步行街中段新辟占地8800平方米的世纪广场。广场中央设“金坪”，地面与金带相似。广场建有舞台，供演唱、时装展及表演之用。建成后举办各种文化活动不下千场，成为时尚、高雅、现代文化的公众展示台。广场东部设音乐旱喷泉，配有光带辐射，喷洒时，灯光与水珠交相辉映。广场草坪上耸立仿古“东方宝鼎”和“世纪元钟”，东方宝鼎高308米，重45吨，象征吉祥如意；世纪之钟，仿商代钟鼎造型，钟体古朴典雅，蕴意百年巨变。步行街全街设置34个造型各异的花坛，种植6棵巨型香樟树和18棵树龄百年以上独体构骨树。世纪广场是步行街的“绿肺”，阶梯式绿坡与林荫道令游人心怡。

步行街开街后，显示“万商云集，百川汇海”的活力，仍然汇集着许多冠名第一的商店、知名宾馆及百年老字号。上海市第一百货商店位于南京东路西端，是上海第一家最大的国营百货公司，由原旧上海闻名全国的南京路四大公司之一大新公司的老楼与新楼组成姐妹楼。老楼主要经营百货，新楼不仅引入时尚的知名品牌，还增加餐饮、影院等休闲功能。紧邻的东方商厦，原址为中百一店的东楼，与上海市第一百货商店的老楼通过三个层面的玻璃天桥相连接，销售中高档百货。东侧的上海市第一食品商店，原为四大公司之一的新新公司，经营的食品有12000余种，是国内外名优食品和各地土特产食品的销售总汇，也是全国最大的食品专业单体卖场。位于步行街中段的上海永安百货有限公司，前身为永安公司，也是四大公司之一，一度改名为上海第十百货商店、华联商厦，以享受经典，快乐购物为经营理念，销售中高档商品。在永安百货门口，能欣赏到怀旧的萨克斯演奏，感受旧上海别样风情。对面是上海时装公司，原址为四大公司之一的先施公司，经营各种名特服装和流行时装。

步行街上还可见到不少商店门口有中华老字号商店的铜牌。如创始于1806年的吴良材眼镜店，验光配镜闻名海内外；创办于1874年的亨达利钟表店，内设世界名表专柜，品种不少于百种；创立于1900年的朵云轩，收藏与经营字画、文房四宝等，是上海最知名的书画商店；分别创建于1861年和1883年的雷允上、蔡同德，位上海四大中药名店之列。创建于1923年的王开照相馆，是上海最大的特级照相馆。还有创建于1942年的上海帐子公司、1923年的茂昌眼镜店、1852年的邵万生南货店和老凤祥银楼、1917年的鸿翔时装公司(东号)等。这些老字号已成为都市景观中一道商业文化的风景线，显示着南京路步行街的历史积淀和人文精神。
2019年底，南京路步行街东拓升级改造项目启动。这是南京路步行街自1999年开街以来最大规模的一次升级改造，东拓工程包括路面铺装、绿化提升、城市家具更新、灯光景观升级以及外立面整治等一系列配套项目。2020年9月12日，上海旅游节开幕式当天南京路步行街东拓段正式开街，步行街由河南中路向东延伸至中山东一路。从此，上海最著名的两大地标——南京东路步行街和外滩将紧密相连，成为中华第一商业街新亮点。

东方明珠广播电视塔（The Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower）是上海的标志性文化景观之一，位于浦东新区陆家嘴，塔高约468米。该建筑于1991年7月兴建，1995年5月投入使用，承担上海6套无线电视发射业务，地区覆盖半径80公里。
东方明珠广播电视塔是国家首批AAAAA级旅游景区。塔内有太空舱、旋转餐厅、上海城市历史发展陈列馆等景观和设施，1995年被列入上海十大新景观之一。

东方明珠广播电视塔是多筒结构，以风力作用作为控制主体结构的主要因素。主干是3根直径9米，高287米的空心擎天大柱，大柱间有6米高的横梁连结；在93米标高处，由3根直径7米的斜柱支撑着，斜柱与地面呈60°交角。该建筑有425根基桩入地12米，上千吨的3个钢结构圆球分别悬挂在塔身112米、295米和350米的高空，钢筋混凝土的建筑加3根近百米高的斜撑。
电视塔的塔身具有较强的稳定性，其设计抗震标准为“7级不动，8级不裂，9级不倒”。此外，该建筑还有着良好的抗风性能。
