在郦道元的水经注里有关白龙江的记载语焉不详，只有与陇南有关的西汉水的记述，特别是西汉水的一条极不起眼的支流平乐河，只有几十公里长，却有比较详细的记载。即便是西汉水，从发源地到汇入嘉陵江，也没有白龙江长，这可能与当时白龙江的主要发源地和流经区，历史上的甘南、陇南正处于少数民族政权治辖，不便考察统计有关。

白龙江发源于甘肃省甘南藏族自治州碌曲县、玛曲县与四川阿坝藏族自治州若尔盖县交界的郎木寺，流经甘南州的迭部县、舟曲县、陇南市的宕昌县、武都区、文县，在四川广元市境内的昭化区汇入嘉陵江，在甘肃境内流长约600公里，流域覆盖面积318万平方公里。

白龙江是嘉陵江的一级支流，长江的二级支流，历史上曾名桓水、羌水、白水。实际上，叫“白水”是错误的。从四川九寨沟发源、流经陇南文县、与白龙江会合后而汇入到嘉陵江的白水江，才叫做“白水”，与甘肃文县毗邻的四川青川县有白水镇，便因白水江得名。三国志里记载的姜维在白水带兵屯垦，就在这里。叫“羌水”也有道理，东晋南北朝时期，白龙江流域曾经是羌人地方政权治辖的地方。至于为何叫“桓水”，就无法考证了。

在我国许许多多著名的江河之中，白龙江不算是一条大河，古代的情况不可考，即使现今，全流域也就是近130个乡镇，藏族乡镇占1/6。总人口约130万左右，其中汉族约110多万人，藏族约11万人，占总人口数的1/10。但是，它还是有可说可道之处。

白龙江水系呈不规则的树枝状分布，支流大部分在右岸汇入，主要支汊与主干汇集后向东南顺流而下。白龙江流域面积大于300平方公里的一级支流有13条；大于500平方公里的有11条。作为嘉陵江上游的最大河流，白龙江还是中国西部亚热带与暖温带的分界线，与秦岭、淮河同为中国地理上的重要分界线。白龙江总长约600公里，流域年降水量600-900毫米，年径流量约87亿立方米，5-10月流量大，占全年的75%左右，也是地质灾害容易引发的月份。

其中的支流北峪河，在武都县北部，发源于武都县北安化镇瓦房山，西南流经安化、柏林、马街，至武都县城汇人白龙江。河长44公里，流域面积432平方公里。流域呈掌网状形。长度15公里以上支流有四家沟、马家沟、安坪沟等40条。年均径流量032亿立米，平均比降177乐。流域内由于长期毁林开荒，加上山高坡陡，滑坡和水土流失严重，是闻名的泥石流沟。水土流失面积为374平方公里，占流域总面积的867%。1949年以来,下游河床淤积抬高52米，武都县城形成水高城低之势，洪水季节时严重危及城区安全。

岷江是白龙江的主要支流，曾名白龙江，乾江，在宕昌县境内又名宕昌河。因宕昌县古属岷州，所以叫岷江。笔者认为，把宕昌河叫岷江，也是错误的。因为，宕昌河的上游主要有三条支流，一是南河，二是理川河，三是哈达铺河，南河是常年河，理川河和哈达铺河是季节河，所以它的源头还是南河。而南河发源于与甘南迭部县交界的地方，更重要的是，历史上的岷州亦即现今的岷县，属于黄河流域，所以把宕昌河叫做岷江不符合实际，是很牵强的。这条河流经宕昌县城，至两河口注人白龙江。全长100多公里，流域面积2235平方公里，年径流量607亿立方米。至于它何以叫乾江，亦不可考；叫白龙江，就更不合适了。

还有一种说法是，白水江是白龙江的支流，曾名羌水，也值得商榷。准确地说，白龙江、白水江、让水河，是嘉陵江三个主要支流，它们在文县碧口镇交汇之后，只几十公里就汇入嘉陵江了。倒是把白龙江、白水江统称为羌水，还是有一定道理的。历史上，这两条江流域都出现过羌族地方政权，是羌人久居之地。

白龙江流域水能理论蕴藏量4327万千瓦，在历次勘测规划的基础上，水利部成都勘测设计院会同水利部第五工程局，最新规划进行11级梯级开发，干流及主要支流白水江的技术可开发装机容量共为35576MW，年发电量13059亿kWh；截止2016年，已建成200余座水电站。

白龙江流域工业不甚发达，上游地区以畜牧、林业为主，中下游地区以农业为主。流域灌溉以完善灌溉工程配套建设，推广节水技术为主，已建的宝珠寺、碧口等水库枢纽能解决部分灌溉与供水需求，后期可建设苗家坝等水源工程，进一步满足灌溉及供水要求。

白龙江流域是一个多民族聚居区，除了汉族、藏族之外，还有回族、氐族、羌族、蒙古族等，但数量不多。在元代以前，白龙江流域的主体民族一直是羌、氐、藏等少数民族。汉族虽然陆续有进入该流域落业的，但数量不多。盛行佛教、道教，境内沿白龙江有郎木寺、武都龙华寺、武都通化山普化寺、武都城关莲华山寺、武都龙凤山寺院、武都龙凤佛堂寺、陇南汉王寺、万象洞寺院、广严院、琵琶寺、邬金寺、武都坪牙喇嘛庙等数百座佛教寺庙，使得白龙江成为中国西部的佛教文化盛行的圣河。

从明代开始，为了巩固边关，“教化异族”，政府开始了往白龙江流域大规模地迁徙汉人的移民工程。加上明清两代的军屯、民屯，更为重要的是两次流民高潮，使汉民逐渐成为白龙江流域的主体居民。第一次流民高潮出现在明末清初数十年的战乱期间，川蜀移民大量涌入白龙江流域。第二次流民高潮出现在清朝同治年间的陕甘回民大起义的十多年间，陕西移民大量涌入本流域。

由于白龙江流域山大沟深，林密流急，明清以后较少遭遇苛政和兵燹，因而吸引了大批流民的迁徙到来。尤其加上地域因素，四川、湖北涌来的流民更多。今陇南各地普遍流传着其祖先是由“四川大槐树”下迁来的说法。根据民国时期编纂的陇南《徽县新志》和《西和县志》记载，以及现今能见到的一些家谱材料，证明这些说法是确切的。

新中国建立以前，千里白龙江上没有一座桥。要想过对岸去，除了流水平缓处有渡船外，在水流湍急处，只有靠溜索渡江。白龙江上的溜索，是一曲绚丽多彩的生命之歌。白龙江的落差大，在她将近五百公里的行程中，从海拔三千多米的高原一直到海拔五百多米处和嘉陵江汇合，平均每公里就有五米的落差。古代人们是很难在这样的激流上架设桥梁的，于是就发明了溜索。古代把溜索称之为“撞”，所谓“悬撞渡索”即指溜索。制造溜索的材料很多，在铁索出现之前，古人用藤条、竹篾、皮筋等物拧成缆绳悬于江水两岸绳上，套一木索子，可以滑动，木索下系绳套或木板，渡河的人坐在上面用手攀援缆绳使木索滑动向前，从而达到过河的目的。宋代大诗人陆游曾到过陇南，他目睹了溜索后写下一首“度管”诗：“翩翩翻翻管受风，行人疾走缘虚空。四观目眩浪花上，小跌身裹蛟龙中。”说明了溜索的危险。陇南是有名的古战场，军队行军打仗，多少粮草和辎重都要靠溜索运送，足见我们古人的智慧和勇气。

建国后许多溜索变成了索桥，其实索桥就是用许多绳索组合在一起的多索桥，后来逐渐发展成为麻网桥、藤索网桥、铁索网桥。桥上铺上树枝或木板，走上去晃晃悠悠，却比溜索安全方便了许多。陇南最早的铁索桥建于十九世纪末的清朝，叫“永济桥”，桥长60多米，方形主索九根，压桥索和拦桥索各两根，全用熟铁锻造。在桥两面各埋碗口粗的铁柱九根，铁索环扣于铁柱之上，和泸定桥的建造一模一样。这座桥的修造，大大方便了甘川的交通，当时的阶州知府写诗赞道：“架木成桥自古难，而今铁链索江干。行人抬手若相问，西蜀滇南共此安。”但是让我们不解的是那时一无大型的起重设备，二无大型的运输工具，这成吨的铁索是怎么越过崇山峻岭，又是怎样飞跨过湍急江流的？我们不能不对古人克难治险的智慧肃然起敬。改革开放以后，白龙江上的索桥已不适应社会的发展，大多数也退出了历史的舞台，结束了它们的使命，代之而起的是一座又一座宽阔的钢筋混凝土大桥，它们横跨南北，为地方的经济发展做着无私的奉献。

白龙江里主要的鱼种是细鳞鱼。传说太平天国时期，石达开在四川的雅安乘船过江的时候，不慎将自己的一把宝剑掉进了江里，被江里的鱼儿吞了去，久而久之，这把宝剑在鱼儿的脑袋里面安了家，所以四川雅安人也叫它宝剑鱼。不知为何，这种鱼却来到千里之外的白龙江里安家落户了，它的正式名称叫鮦鱼。由于兴修梯级式水电站，拦水坝没留生态孔，故而濒临绝迹了。

传说从前黑龙江叫做白龙江，江里住着条白龙管理着这片土地。但是白龙个性顽劣凶残，导致两岸常发大水，百姓苦不堪言。后来江中来了条黑龙，与白龙大战后得胜，并杀死了白龙，统治了龙江，从此再无大水，百姓爱戴黑龙，从此白龙江更名黑龙江。还有一种说法是，白龙败给黑龙后被黑龙驱逐出北方，只好逃至中国西部。这一传说的依据，就是甘肃有一条白龙江。
